Theoretician and tactician of guerilla warfare and a prominent figure in the Cuban Revolution, Guevara’s death at age thirty-nine, which happened while he was fighting for Communism in Bolivia in 1967, helped to ensure his lasting fame. A photograph taken on March 5, 1960, by photojournalist Diaz Gutierrez, of Guevara wearing a black beret with a star and an uplifted but somber gaze has be- come the one of the best-known portraits in the world.
