So it goes #7

I adore Vonnegut, and got this tattoo roughly two months after a serious two year relationship ended. The break-up drove me into depression, and near suicide. When I informed my ex’s best friend I had to stop speaking with him, he responded with the quote. Most people see it when I wear dresses and inquire about it, but never fully get it. Sometimes, weeks later, they will tell me they finally really get it, not just what it means to me, but what it means to them too. But for the ones who do not fully get it, they will one day, unfortunately. I believe it takes a lot of hurt, a death or the dying of something important to make someone understand. So it goes.

This was posted as a part of “So it Goes” Saturdays.  The phrase “so it goes” appears in Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five 116 times.  Can you help me collect 116 “so it goes” tattoos?  7 down, 109 to go.

My friend has a similar tattoo on her shoulderblade. Both yours and hers are beautiful, I love Vonnegut too. <3

my first tattoo will be the same words, with my own personal twist … I decided this after i missed an opportunity to meet the late, great KVjr & then found out he passed away a week later. excellent, intelligent tat. :-D

Why thank you Sean. ;)

Such a whim to do it there really, isn’t typical, but lovin’ it.

that is gorgeous. i love vonnegut for his humour but he can cut to the quick too.

the apollonian and the dionysian, he was truly tragic.

your tattoo is kingly. my first tattoo will be those words as well…death of a close family member, divorce of my parents after 26 years of marriage, my best friend moving across the country, finding out the man you love loves someone else……so…it…goes. brilliance.

I understand the saying utterly and completely, but I’m sorry – breaking up with a loved one, in my opinion, is not reason enough to want to kill yourself nor is it something in which closely relates to this quote.

You’re happy with it, so be it; but being one who has struggled their whole life, lost many friends and relatives through unfortunate deaths, overdoses or suicides – I find it sort of offensive that others are unable to cope with things which are not that significant.

I have also been broken up with by a person who I was with for seven years; I was certain they were going to be with me for the rest of my life, and when it ended it was terrible. But I picked myself up and moved on.

But I suppose those who are lucky enough to hardly experience many horrors (if any) in their life, do not build up a resistance to the pain and suffering.
