This is Ally’s tattoo from On the Social Contract by Jean-Jacques Rousseau:
Tags: Jean-Jacques Rousseau, On the Social ContractI first saw the quote when I was about 14 or 15; it stayed with me for a long time. Nine years down the road, when I finally made up my mind to get my first tattoo, I decided on this quote because I agreed with the sentiment completely. Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains – we are all bound by something beyond our control.

This is one of my favorite quotes by a brilliant man, and I love the script you chose. Lovely choice!
i think this is a sad sentiment, but I adore the script you have used.
it’s beautiful and oh so true…
This reminds me very much of the opening chapters to Erich Fromm’s Fear from freedom:
“After centuries of struggles, man succeeded in building an undreamed-of wealth of material goods; he built democratic societies in parts of the world, and recently was victorious in defending himself against new totalitarian schemes; yet modern man still is anxious and tempted to surrender his freedom to dictators of all kinds, or to lose it by transforming himself into a small cog in the machine, well fed, and well clothed, yet not a free man but an automation.”
You should read it :)
