So it goes #12
This is Bekka's tattoo:
"So it goes..." has meant a lot to me the last couple years. I've dealt with the loss of a mother, a friend, and a family friend, and "so it goes" has just reminded me that life continues on no matter what the circumstances. Above it is a celtic triskel, which means waaaaay more than I could ever explain in a few sentences.
This was posted as a part of “So it Goes” Saturdays. The phrase “so it goes” appears in Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five 106 times. Can you help me collect 106 “so it goes” tattoos? 12 down, 94 to go.

There is a reason for it.
Besides, if it means something to someone, they have every right to get a tattoo of it. Just because it means something to a lot of people doesn't make it any less important for any one of them.

There are billions of books, quotes, thoughts and philosophy sentences…
Are you telling me that everyone as the felling for the same exact sentence´?
I mean, not taking credit to "so it goes" that has the importance that it has, I'm just saying that in the uncoutable possible quotes…it is THIS one the most meaningful for all those people?
I'm sure this has a lot of meanings for a lot of people but…I would never tattoo something after somebody, speacilally when so many people uses..

Really nice. Don't know much Vonnegut but love the triskele! It's one of my favorite goddess symbols.

Some of the comments on this are ridiculous. First of all, I doubt that any of these people knew that these tattoos were so popular when they got them. While I've seen a lot on this site, I've never even seen ONE in real life, so it's not like you see people walking around with the same tattoo all the time. Secondly, do you really expect someone to go "Oh wow. Slaughterhouse Five is a really amazing book and the phrase 'So it goes' has really helped me cope with the loss of my husband/wife/mom/dad/etc. and it means more to me than anything else I've read but there are *gasp* other people in the world who have the same tattoo so I guess I'm not going to get it. Let me go and read the billions of other books in the world so that I can find something that means the exact same thing but is more obscure." Are you that affected and pretentious that you refuse to do something you love just because others have done it before? Slaughterhouse Five is an amazing book. Kurt Vonnegut is an amazing writer. "So it goes" is a good phrase to live by and encompasses a lot of meaning into a short, tattoo-able mantra. Kudos to those people in the world who are ballsy enough to get something they love tattooed on them, regardless of whether or not others have gotten the same thing. And honestly, are you really thick enough to think that this phrase means the same thing to everyone who reads it, let alone gets it tattooed on them?

So it goes speaks to so many people simply because it is such a universal sentiment. It is a beautiful tattoo.
July 26th, 2009 - 09:02
lol
you missed the all point. Still "so it goes" IS the new "carpe diem"
July 26th, 2009 - 09:45
"So it goes" is not the new "Carpe diem." I have only met two people who even knew the so it goes reference. Most people know carpe diem. It is NOT that popular. This just happens to be a literary tattoo website if you have no noticed, and therefore a literary allusion tattoo that speaks to many is going to be seen quite a few times.
If anything it is the new "c'est la vie."
If you guys hate seeing these tattoos so much, then please stop visiting the sight and putting forth negative energy for no real reason. I have never seen another person with a "So it goes" tattoo in life. Yes, quite a few people have them. She has only collected a mere 12. There are billions of people in the world.
I'd rather see 12 So it goes tattoos than 12 butterfly tramp stamps. There is usually a lot more love and care for words, for literature, than there averagely is for a cute picture that countless girls have inked into their skin.
And thank you, Ryann.
And to Bekka, it is sad people are spamming your tattoo by criticizing how many people also share it. It's beautiful. You love it, that is all that matters really. The symbol brings a uniqueness factor in full force.

Couldn't agree more with what you said about litteracy tattoos. I have a few, a few more planned and I couldn't imagine myself tattoing another thing but letters. Some people say it will look like a news paper or some other things like that, but I couldn't care less! So shouldn't (and I'm sure they don't) the people who have "so it goes" about what me not liking. Yet, it's my opinion.
What you feel abut the tramp stamps or "c'est la vie" (wich I also agree), is what I feel about "so it goes". So why is it my though that awful?
Beasides, I never said this particular tattoo was bad. I actually like the font very much, it is diferent but simple. Plus the triskel gives it a new aproach.
And I think we are all waisting our time with all this fuzz about what I said.

I like this. I may be biased because I am also one of the many (apparently) who have "So it goes" tattooed on them, though mine is accompanied by another Vonnegut reference. I didn't realize they were so popular until I googled it after I already had the tattoo. Though I don't regret it at all; it makes me feel like part of some strange community.

Severus – I'm very curious to see some of your tattoos………?
July 28th, 2009 - 11:30
Never had a chance to upload them, specially 'cause I need help taking the pictures, I can't do it on my own. And the Picts I have aren't good to put here.
But I will!

Severus Flecha – you're allowed you have your own opinion. It gets rude and unnecessary when you negatively comment on someone else's tattoo. They liked it, that's all that matters. Yes, you're free to dislike it, but it's unnecessary and childish to comment about it.
If you don't like it, be respectful and move on. It's that simple.

Did anyone here ever read my saying anything bad about a tattoo?
Really…read my posts! Not once said anything against font, draw, meaning of reasons of the owner choice! You can check!
August 5th, 2009 - 22:19
@Severus: I get where you're coming from, and I'm not mad that you're upset about the pervasiveness of it. Not to toot my own horn, but I am extremely well read, and yeah, I probably could have come up with a unique quote, but the thing is, I don't care if there are people out there with the same tattoo as me. While tattooing is about individuality, it's also about personal meaning. And I'm pretty sure that goes for quite a few people. I didn't get it to be arty or edgy, I got it because that was the only phrase running through my head that made any goddamn sense in this world. I appreciate your compliment on the style.

@bekka- tks 4 your comment. I respect your choice and I have nothing to do with what you choose to do. Even if your tattoo had not the meaning that is has, even if you wanted to put "so it goes" just because.
My humble opinion is that there are too many, and I did comment on this one because it was this one that appeared.
Please don't let yourself be mistaken and nobody ever think that I'm censuring any tattoo in particular…I don't do that.
And this will be my last comment about any "So It Goes" tattoo. I'd already decided that a few days ago.
I'm only writing again because there was the moral obligation of answering back to the owner of the tattoo.

amen and i second that to ryann's post….
January 25th, 2011 - 18:23
Maybe so many people feel this quote is significant because Kurt Vonnegut is a magnificent author who is able to capture an immense amount of universal meaning into three words. Ever think about that?

My 19 year old daughter just got the "so it goes" tattoo on her forearm. While I am not wild about her getting a tattoo of any kind, I am proud of her for choosing a literary tattoo that showcases her knowledge of literature while at the same time expresses a great sentiment!
