Nevermore

Literary Tattoos: The Raven Edgar Allan Poe

This is Krisa’s tattoo.

I have been a huge fan of Poe for many years and have always wanted to be able to show my love for Poe in a simple and elegant way.

I am often asked about what the tattoo says, with many people then asking “Nevermore, is that a band or something?” to which i get to joyously reply, “no it is a quote from The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. I like both tattoos and Victorian literature, is that so strange?”

This is Amber‘s.

My father passed away in 2006 and each year since I have gotten a tattoo on what was his birthday. I have always loved Poe and thought it would make a good memorial since he is missing a lost loved one.

This is Jennifer’s.

And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted – nevermore!

    I just wish I could read the word “nevermore” without hearing it in Bart Simpson’s voice!

    Very moving post. The ‘Nevermore’ is a great tattoo design for women. I like the simplicity of the tattoo. I think this is what makes it work so well.
