I watched the movie for the first time when I was about 11 years old. I was completely baffled, yet strangely drawn to Thompson’s weird universe. I re-watched the movie several times during the following years and it was always one of my favorites. Then, a couple of years ago, I read the book for the first time, and I’ve never laughed so hard. Then when I went to NYC with a couple of friends in February, we decided to all get tattoos. The first thing that came to mind was to get a quote from the book. I looked around in it for a while, and a lot of great quotes stood out. Most of them were overused though. When I found this one, however, there was no doubt in my mind. To me, it just captures the entire surreal mood of the story and Thompson’s subtle and outrageous humor. I’ve loved it from the second I saw it on my arm.

“With a bit of luck, his life was ruined forever. Always thinking that just behind some narrow door in all of his favorite bars, men in red woolen shirts are getting incredible kicks from things he’ll never know.”
