It strikes me as the simplest explanation of life and everything in it.

I just finished my undergraduate degrees, and decided to get something to remind me that things are not always in my control.

I had this famous line tattooed onto my ankle four years after my grandfather died. One week prior to his death, I read Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. These two events marked a significant point in my life where I gained a new perspective on life, death and loss.
In this passage, Vonnegut puts into words what I cannot."The most important thing I learned on Tralfamadore was that when a person dies he only appears to die. He is still very much alive in the past, so it is very silly for people to cry at his funeral. All moments, past, present and future, always have existed, always will exist.
The Tralfamadorians can look at all the different moments just that way we can look at a stretch of the Rocky Mountains, for instance. They can see how permanent all the moments are, and they can look at any moment that interests them. It is just an illusion we have here on Earth that one moment follows another one, like beads on a string, and that once a moment is gone it is gone forever.
When a Tralfamadorian sees a corpse, all he thinks is that the dead person is in bad condition in the particular moment, but that the same person is just fine in plenty of other moments. Now, when I myself hear that somebody is dead, I simply shrug and say what the Tralfamadorians say about dead people, which is "So it goes."
This tattoo continues to helps me cope with any loss, by reminding me that everything is forever; what may not be seen is still there.

It's done in my handwriting. I got it to remind myself that sometimes shit falls apart. It happens. Everything can hit the fan and tear my life to shreds; it's happened before and it will again and I have no control over it. Like the Tralfamadorians say, it simply is. But I can handle it. I always have. So it Goes.

I saw all the pictures of people with tattoos from Slaughterhouse 5 so I decided to read the book and fell in love with it. After reading it, I couldn't not get the tattoo.

My Slaughterhouse 5 tribute; not only my favourite book but a philosophy that was strangely helpful when it came to combatting a struggle with depression.

I got it in June of 2009. It helps to remind me that there is good and bad in all aspects of life and to take them in stride. People can't dwell on just the positive or negative in life. They say life is what you make it, but everyone needs to accept that some things are out of our control.

I decided to get "So it goes." while I was attending college and Kurt Vonnegut passed away. It took several years, but I finally had it done by Tim at Black Thorn Gallery in Mechanicsburg, PA this past summer. The meaning behind it, that you can either let things that happen in life weigh on you or you can just roll with the punches really resonates with me.

These are my bluebirds, done by Mimsy Trailer Trash Tattoo, Australia. I got So It Goes for the same reason many of your submitters did - it is a simple statement, but resonates on many different levels... & Slaughterhouse Five was the first book my husband ever read to me, so holds an extra special meaning to me!

I wanted to get that tattooed on me because I have the biggest problem in the world just letting bygones be bygones. I never really felt like the traditional, "Let it be," was appropriate for me, so when I came upon this, I knew I had to get it. I've recently had a lot of heartbreak and really wanted to chase after the people that left me to try anything to make it work. "So it goes," reminds me that when one door closes, another opens, that everything happens for a reason and that we can't control everything. The sparrow represents hope and reminds me to keep going because something greater is just around the corner; that there is a light midst this darkness.

I got it as a reminder to not get too worked up about daily life. For the most part things are fine and sometimes things aren't but thats life. So it goes. I also love that only some people will get it and I don't bother explaining to those who don't.

This is Noll's.
I believe that while we should try to experience fully and indulge in every moment of life, that many things are fundamentally beyond our control, that shit happens, and there is nothing we can do about it. I decided to get two totally unrelated literary tattoos, which, together, sum up this duality - passion for holding on to the things you never want to let go because, for at least one moment, they were all that mattered, and then the whimsical dismissal of their finitude as something beyond your control, which is in no way something to be mourned.
"So it goes" obviously represents the latter. I have yet to find its partner, but I'm sure that I will.

"So it goes" is a quote that helps me to remember all the hard times I've gone through and overcome. It reminds me when I'm struggling that life indeed does go on. It also reminds me that death is most definitely inevitable, but those passed are certainly not gone and continue to live on through memories. The snowflake is for my dog, Snowflake, who was my best friend for 15 years of my life who passed away. So it goes.
