I’ve been an Alice fan since my grandmother bought me the complete works of Carroll when I was 11. Something from Alice seemed like a natural choice for my tat, and being a voracious reader, I loved the idea of using a line of text rather than an image.

“Dear, dear! How queer everything is to-day! And yesterday things went on just as usual. I wonder if I’ve been changed in the night? Let me think: was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I’m not the same, the next question is, Who in the world am I? Ah, THAT’S the great puzzle!”

And she began thinking over all the children she knew that were of the same age as herself, to see if she could have been changed for any of them.

I’ve wanted this tattoo for almost a decade. My favorite book as a child, my son’s favorite book now. I am a children’s services librarian by training (although sadly not by trade – I’m currently in a bookstore), and I wrote extensively on the work of Maurice Sendak, and specifically Where the Wild Things Are, in conjunction with earning my master’s degree. I’m going to have have it colored true to the original illustration. Tattooist is George Campise.

Deana’s Where the Wild Things Are tattoo comes with a complicated story:

I got this when my son was 9 months old. His name is Max, and he was born with a very rare metabolic disease which caused a severe form of epilepsy. At 4 months old, we had surgery to remove the part of his brain that was causing 250 seizures a day. The whole time he lay in the pediatric ICU at the Children’s Hospital, we would tell him to keep fighting…to ROAR!!! He pulled through, and we made it out of there with our son.

I always loved the name Max, and was certain I would name my son that. I could have never imagined how he would turn out to be such a fighter. Or all the Wild Things he would have to face in his short life.

I chose this particular scene in the book because, this is the point where Max met the Wild Things, and tamed them with his magic trick. And they called him the most wild thing of all.

“…And when he came to the place where the wild things are they roared their terrible roars…and gnashed their terrible teeth…and rolled their terrible eyes…and showed their terrible claws…till Max said “BE STILL!” and tamed them with the magic trick of staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once…and they were frightened and called him the most wild thing of all…and made him the king of all wild things.” “And now,” cried Max, “let the wild rumpus start!”…”

That’s how I see my Max. As the most wild thing of all. The one who told all the other wild things to BE STILL! And the rest of his life has been, and forever will be the wild rumpus.

You can read the whole story of her son here.

Where the Wild Things Are was my very favorite book. And still is, really. Max and I share a name, and a very special bond.
I hope Spike Jonze doesn’t mess that up.

When I read Season of Mists, I thought about the Key to Hell as the perfect piece of art to be inked, it was perfect, with a deep meaning, related with Neil Gaiman and with a great design!

I got it to deal with changes, I’ve always been some sort of status quo person and changes in every sense affect me a lot. This tattoo have help me through my very own seasons of mists.

This tattoo was submitted by Preeti and is from Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, Volume 9: The Kindly Ones.

Gaiman’s a favorite of mine, and the quote just really struck me, I’ve got a bit of wanderlust and want desperately to see everything and live everywhere. Not to mention, Lucifer says it to Delirium and barring Dream, they’re my two favorite characters.

I’ve been working on a feature film in the middle of nowhere (I do stills), and of course the day I head into the land of no internet access, Neil Gaiman links to my site on his Twitter!

I am declaring the next 5 days “Neil Gaiman Week”. I say 5 days because I am headed back to the land of no internet access in 20 minutes and I don’t have time for a full week’s worth of posts.

Theme Week: Tattoo Misspellings

Day 7: It would have been so pretty…

Last night I dreamed a sweet sweet dream
I thought I saw my home sweet home
And oh how grand it all did seem
I made a vow no more to roam
By that dear old village church I strolled
While the bell in the steeple sadly called
I saw my daddy old and grey
I heard my dear old mother say
You’re as welcome as the flowers in May and we love you in the same old way
We’ve been waiting for you day by day, you’re as welcome as the flowers in May
We’ve been waiting for you day by day, you’re as welcome as the flowers in May
